Named for Miss Anna Quinlan — Railroad Heritage

While Collin McKinney settled within a few miles of the future townsite in 1846, Captain John F. Greer, who arrived in 1867, is credited with building the first home and store in what would become Anna. The Houston and Texas Central Railway extended its Dallas-to-Denison line through the area in 1872-1873.

In 1883, some twenty people moved to the area near the railroad stop. The town was named in honor of Miss Anna Quinlan, daughter of George A. Quinlan, superintendent of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. (Anna Elizabeth Quinlan was born September 8, 1878, married Edward Tom Randle of Dallas in 1902, and lived until 1952.) Notably, the neighboring town of Melissa was also named for a Quinlan daughter—making these sister cities in more ways than one.

From Gristmill to Incorporated City

By the time Anna was platted in 1883, it had a population of 20, two stores, a steam gristmill, and a Baptist church. A post office opened that same year. In 1885, the railroad built a depot, and by 1890 the population had grown to nearly 200.

Anna was incorporated on May 3, 1913, with John L. Greer as its first mayor. The initial municipal boundaries covered approximately 640 acres centered around the railroad depot. By 1914, Anna had its own bank (Continental Bank, organized 1902), cotton gins, grain elevators, and agricultural businesses serving the surrounding farms. In 1915, the Greenville and Whitewright Northern Traction Company built a railroad from Anna to Blue Ridge via Westminster, though this line was abandoned by 1920.

From 538 to 32,000 — A Century of Transformation

For most of the 20th century, Anna remained a modest farming community. The 1920 Census recorded 538 residents, declining to 467 by 1930 during the Great Depression, then rebounding to 509 in 1940, 525 in 1950, 639 in 1960, and 736 in 1970. The town served as a shipping point for cotton, corn, wheat, and truck crops via the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Everything changed in the 2000s. Anna’s population exploded from approximately 1,225 in 2000 to 9,751 in 2010, then to 16,896 in 2020. By 2024, the population reached 32,000, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Multiple factors drive this growth: the Texas Instruments semiconductor plant in nearby Sherman, expansion of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex northward, affordable housing compared to cities closer to Dallas, and Anna’s strong schools and low crime rate.
