Botox is one of the world’s most widely researched and sought-after therapeutic agents. It has a proven track record as a cosmetic injectable to address crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines, and glabellar lines.
Botox is a neuromodulator and is made from a toxin derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. After the toxin is extracted, it undergoes a series of purification steps that leave behind a crystalline complex containing a mix of the toxin and proteins. Muscles in the face work or move when they receive signals to move from the nerve fibers via chemical transmitters known as acetylcholine.
When Botox is injected into the muscles in the area to be treated, the toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine and stops muscle contraction. As the muscles are stopped from contracting, the wrinkles and lines caused by muscle movements such as squinting, frowning, or raising eyebrows are reduced significantly.
